The Mountaineer Military Museum 345
Center Ave. Started as a promise. Four childhood friends were drafted into the US Military
at the same time,and sent
off to Vietnam. Three made the ultimate sacrifice. One came home. A promise
was made to them—"I will not forget.you" Since 1968, when Ron McVaney
started on his quest collecting military memorabilia. Piece by piece, memory
by memory……, the promise grew. Many years went by and what began as memorial to veterans
of the Vietnam War came to include memorabilia from all US Wars, including
the Civil War. . The items and
containers piled up. Every vacation turned into a search at every yard sale,
flea market, and antique store. Soon Ron's wife, Barbara, joined in the effort
to help fulfill "the promise." She focused on collecting things from the American homefront that were a part of the war years. They often took their display on the road. Sharing
"the promise" with schools, churches and organizations. But the
setting up and dismantling began to damage some of the more fragile items. For a short while, Ron and Barbara were
able to house their collection temporarily in a Buckhannon storefront - then
at the Old Weston State Hospital -before find a permanent home in downtown Weston in 2007. The
Museum is intended to honor all West Viriginas those who have
served their country in all it's wars and conflicts, hence the name
"Mountaineer" Military Museum. The McVaneys
also want to help educate future generations about the
importance of such honor and patriotism. Located in
the Old "Colored"
School, itself a National Historic landmark in Weston, visitors are welcome to
come and experience some of the United States greatest military moments and honor
those who served. You can see history through their eyes of those who served and who waited
at home. Our exhibits cover your military history locally as well as abroad.
